The opening game of day three at the 2019 Women’s U25 World Championship was the third-fourth position decider of Pool B between Germany and Turkey.

Germany took early control in the first quarter as Turkey struggled to find a way out of the German’s press defence, giving Germany a 13-4 lead.

Turkey opened the second quarter with a change of line-up which helped them break the press as they went on a 9-2 unanswered run, making the game a one point game at half-time, 17-16, with Germany holding the advantage.

The teams exchanged baskets at the beginning of the third, but then Germany pushed ahead to gain a seven point lead with ten minutes to play. The advantage boosted the German’s confidence and as Turkey tired, Germany won the final quarter 15-0 to win the game, 46-24, and secure third place in the pool.

Germany’s Lisa Bergenthal said, “All in all the game went well for us. There were a number of times during the game where we were struggling and our performance dropped, but we pushed and motivated each other to get ourselves back into the game and that is why we won in the end. We had difficult moments before the half, but then the third and fourth quarter we played the way we wanted to do, we pushed through it and we can be proud of our performance. We are looking forward to our quarter-final match up against Japan.”
